Cherry Sunflower Scones

 Cherry Sunflower Scones

One of my favorite gifts to give at Christmas and everyone loves these scones. Put the dry ingredients in a 32 oz wide mouth mason jar carefully so they are layered and look cute. Print off a recipe cards and give to neighbors and friends. Make great teacher gifts as well. I tie the lid with curling ribbon and punch ah ole in the recipe card. You can fancy it up and hot glue holiday fabric to the lid. Include a spatula or hotpad for a really sweet holiday treat.

Dry ingredients (goes into the jar)

  • 1 1/2 c flour
  • 1 Tbsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/3 c yellow cornmeal
  • 1/2 c sugar
  • 1 c salted sunflower kernels
  • 3/4 c dried cherries (or any dried fruit)
Wet ingredients (recipient adds on their own)
  • 1/2 c unsalted butter
  • 2/3-3/4 c half and half or milk - we use non dairy milk
Instructions
Preheat oven to 425. Line baking sheet with parchment paper. Pour contents of jar (dry ingredients) into large bowl, whisk together. Cut butter into flour mixture with pastry cutter or 2 knives. When mixture is crumbly, add milk 1/4 cup at a time, mixing until dough comes together. If dough is too dry, add more milk 1 Tbsp at a time. Scoop out dough by 1/4 cup and drop on baking sheet. Leave 1" between scones. Bake 15 to 17 minutes or until scones are golden brown.  Cool on baking sheet 5 minutes. Serve warm or room temperature.
