Naan bread

Best pizza crust ever!  We also love eating it warm dipped in homemade hummus.  Time consuming (all-in about 2 hours), but well worth it and Naan bread is impossible to find vegan at the stores so this is a great option to make at home.  Click here to print.

2 tsp. active dry yeast (1 package)
1 cup warm water
2 Tbsp. sugar
6 Tbsp. alternative milk
2 tsp. salt
4 cups bread flour
2 Tbsp. olive oil

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water. Let stand about 10 minutes, until the yeast is active and bubbly.
  2. Stir in the sugar, milk, salt, between 3 1/2 to 4 cups flour.  Add the last 1/2 cup slowly until dough is a smooth consistency.
  3. Knead for 6 minutes in the bowl. Cover with a damp cloth, and set aside to rise. Let it rise 1 hour, until the dough has doubled in volume.
  4. Kneed the dough again for 1 minute then roll into 2" balls and place on a baking sheet. Cover with a towel and allow to rise until doubled in size, about 30 minutes.
  5. Preheat a pan to med-high heat and lightly oil. Roll each ball of dough into a thin circle then add to pan one at a time. Cook for 2 minutes, or until bubbles begin to brown and brush the top side with additional oil. Flip the bread and cook for 2 minutes on the other side. Continue until all the bread is cooked.
