New Year Won Tons
New Year Won Tons
I have fond memories of making and eating these as a family I had to figure out a way to recreate them plant-based style. We did, and no one would ever no any different. My family now loves making and eating them too: I make the filling, kids stuff the won tons, and Jason cooks them. Then we all DEVOUR them! We make them more than once a year, but they are definitely a must-have on NYE with the largest charcuterie board you can imagine. Happy New Year!
- 1 Tbsp ground flax, combine with 3 Tbsp warm water, let sit 10 minutes
- 1 - 12 oz package Impossible ‘beef’ (made from plants)
- 3/4 tsp salt
- 1 1/2 Tbsp Tamari (soy sauce)
- 1 1/2 Tbsp sherry
- 1 8 oz can water chestnuts, chopped finely
- 2 scallions, chopped fine
- 3 leaves of book choy, finely chopped
- 1 package won ton wrappers (found in produce section)
- Plenty of canola oil for frying
- Warm water for sealing
After flax has set 10 minutes combine all ingredients in a bowl, mix well. Put 1 tsp of filling (we use a small melon baller scoop) in the center of won ton wrapper. Dip finger in warm water and slide along 2 of the 4 sides of wrapper. Fold in triangle to “seal” the wrapper.
Place won ton in enough oil to cook the one side, cook for 3 minutes then flip, cook an additional 3 minutes. Place cooked won tons in a warming drawer until all are finished cooking. Serve with Tamari or eat plain.
