Homemade Pizza Sauce
We love homemade pizza, we also love Papa Murphy’s pizza. But they won’t sell or even share their red sauce recipe...so sad. So after several attempts, we’ve come up with what we feel is pretty close competition to their special sauce.
1 can tomato sauce
1 can tomato paste
1/2 onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 tsp dry basil
1 tsp dry oregano
1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
1 bay leaf
1/2 tsp sugar
Pinch of salt and pepper
Sauté chopped onion in olive oil, or better yet garlic olive oil, do not let onion burn. After 4-5 minutes add the minced garlic, basil, oregano, red pepper flakes and cook 1-2 minutes longer. Add sauce, paste, salt, sugar and bay leaf. Simmer on low for 10-30 minutes (hint...while your dough is rising), the longer it cooks, the more robust the flavor.
You can add as much or little of the tomato paste as you like depending on texture. We prefer hearty, thick sauces so we use an entire can of tomato paste.
Spread sauce over your homemade dough (or store bought), add your favorite toppings and you’re in for one delicious pizza night at home!
